chablis grand cru Gueguen Chablis wine tasting

Domaine Céline & Frédéric Gueguen is a well-regarded winery located in Chablis, Burgundy, France. They are a relatively young estate, established in 2013 by Céline and Frédéric Gueguen, both of whom come from long lines of winemaking families in the region. They bring a fresh perspective while respecting the traditional Chablis terroir.

The winery is a true family affair, with Céline and Frédéric at the helm, passionately involved in every aspect from vineyard management to winemaking. Their vineyards are spread across 36 hectares, primarily in the Chablisien and Auxerrois areas. A significant portion of their plantings are on the famous Kimmeridgian subsoil, which is characteristic of the best Chablis vineyards. This ancient marine sediment, rich in tiny fossilized oyster shells (Exogyra virgula), is what imparts the distinct minerality, salinity, and flinty notes to Chablis wines. As with all true Chablis, their wines are made exclusively from 100% Chardonnay.

The Gueguens are committed to sustainable viticulture. They employ environmentally friendly practices in their vineyards and are working towards obtaining “Agriculture Biologique” (organic) certification. Their approach emphasizes expressing the pure terroir of Chablis, resulting in wines known for their freshness, sincerity, and balance. They aim to allow the vintage and the natural characteristics of the soil to shine through in their wines, often described as “artisan” winemakers.

Upon our return, indulge in a curated tasting session featuring 5 of Gueguen’s wines. As you savor each selection, we’ll dig into the unique profiles of these wines, highlighting their origins from Chablis or Auxerre, their ageing potential, and the distinct grape varieties that define them.

Guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Unfortunately the weather was so bad we couldn’t do the tour as we had purchased. The guide gave us a quick look at the vineyard from the top lookout point, took us to see some others and then took us to see the wine press. We went back and tasted the wines but they were only very small amounts. Much smaller than the many other taste sessions we’ve been on. Think I’d have liked to add on the meats as well as the tasting. This would have been a great had the weather been better for us but nobody can predict that. Would definitely recommend this activity to others though
