Escape the ordinary and embark on a sensory journey to the heart of Portugal’s Alentejo region, where time-honored traditions and breathtaking landscapes converge. Here, nestled on the banks of the Guadiana River and steeped in centuries of history, lies the captivating “museum-village” of Mértola. This is more than a destination; it is an experience for the soul, and at the heart of this experience is a unique and intimate gastronomic wine tasting tour. This is your personal invitation to uncover the secrets and extraordinary flavors of Mértola wines in a setting that is as authentic as the vintages themselves.
Your adventure begins at a beautiful Alentejo-based estate, a place where dedication and passion are poured into every bottle. As you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by your hosts, whose warmth and knowledge set the stage for an unforgettable two-hour immersion into the world of regional winemaking. The experience is designed to be personal and exclusive, with small groups of up to eight people, ensuring that you receive a genuine and immersive tasting journey.
The air is crisp with the scent of the countryside as you relax in the picturesque wine gardens, a serene backdrop of nature’s beauty and local heritage. This is the perfect place to raise a glass—be it a fine wine or a celebratory Espumante—and prepare to delight your palate. Your tasting will be a curated exploration of the region’s liquid treasures, where you can sample a selection of white, rosé, and red wines produced right in the Mértola region. With three generous glasses of each wine (125ml per glass), you have ample opportunity to truly savor the distinct profiles and aromatic complexities.
But what is a great wine without an equally great companion? This is where the “gastronomic” part of the experience truly shines. Accompanying your wine flight is a meticulously selected array of regional delicacies, or petiscos. These “amuse-bouches” are a culinary showcase of the Alentejo, with offerings that vary with the seasons and local availability. Imagine indulging in rich, local cheeses, savory charcuterie, and delectable pâtés. Perhaps you’ll discover the sweet, caramelized flavor of chutneys, the earthy crunch of fresh or dried fruits and nuts, or the unique taste of regional sweets. This delightful assortment is a testament to the region’s rich culinary traditions and a perfect complement to the nuances of each wine. The hosts are also attentive to dietary needs, and with advance notice, they can ensure your experience is as perfect as it is delicious.
Beyond the tasting, the estate itself is a part of the story. You have the option to enhance your visit with a 45-minute guided tour of the herdade (estate), where you can delve into its fascinating history and hear the unique stories behind its time-honored traditions. You might also choose an additional tasting of the estate’s local Extra Virgin olive oil, a product crafted with the same care and authenticity as the wines, offering another authentic taste of the Alentejo. The experience is a celebration of both the viticultural and olive oil heritage of this fertile land.
As you enjoy the exquisite wines and food, you’ll also feel the echoes of Mértola’s remarkable past. Mértola is known as a “museum-village” for a reason. Perched on a rocky hill overlooking the Guadiana River, its ancient walls and white-washed houses tell a story of Roman, Sueve, and Moorish occupation. The town’s Islamic heritage is particularly well-preserved, with the main church itself having been a former mosque. This rich history is woven into the very fabric of the landscape, and a walk through Mértola’s narrow, cobblestone streets is like stepping back in time.
The Alentejo region, with its undulating plains of cork oak forests and sun-baked fields, is one of Portugal’s most important wine regions. Its Mediterranean climate—hot, dry, and sunny—provides the perfect conditions for growing robust red grapes like Trincadeira, Aragonez, and Alicante Bouschet, which produce intense, full-bodied wines with notes of wild berries. The white wines, made from grapes such as Antão Vaz and Arinto, are fresh, aromatic, and smooth, often carrying hints of tropical fruits. This rich winemaking tradition, influenced by ancient Roman techniques, is a living heritage that you will taste in every sip.
Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or simply curious to explore, this gastronomic wine tasting experience in Mértola offers a unique and memorable journey. It is a chance to connect with the land, the culture, and the people who have been cultivating this extraordinary heritage for generations. The passionate hosts, the stunning setting, the exceptional wines, and the delicious regional foods combine to create more than just a tour—they create an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left this hidden gem of Portugal. It is a moment of pure indulgence and a toast to the rich, authentic spirit of the Alentejo.

January 25, 2025 at 9:53 amRaymond and Nellson hosted us at their remarkable home 25 mins drive from Beja. We enjoyed the tour of the villa and how the buildings are being restored. We met their horse and dogs. Then we had the wine tasting which was thorough, informative and fun. Nellson provided beautiful platters of finger-food, a perfect accompaniment to the wine. Of course we purchased several bottles, because we enjoyed these wines so much and they will remind us of this super day.
